Uganda power utility readies self in new IT age

Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) is set to engage an independent consultant to advise it on the IT investments necessary to better serve Uganda.
In principle, IT should play a major role in operations if the company is to reach its goals, said Godfrey Kisekka, UETCL IT manager, in an interview.
Investments in IT are costly, Kisekka said, and should not be made without carrying out a study of a company's needs at a particular point in time.
"To therefore determine the type of investment needed for the company, we need a strategy, and that is what we intend to do," he said. "With that strategy in place, we will very easily invest wisely, and everybody will be happy."
UETCL is responsible for the bulk purchase of electricity from generating companies and sale to distribution companies throughout Uganda. It is also responsible for all exports and imports of electricity to Uganda.
