Sierra Leone telecom law follows regional regulations

Sierra Leone's Telecommunications Act of 2006 is 98 percent consistent with the provisions and spirit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Supplementary Acts, a release from the country's Ministry of Information stated.

As a result, the statement added, Sierra Leone was commended at the seventh meeting of ECOWAS ICT ministers in Cape Verde last week.

The meeting was convened to consider the status of the transposition of the Supplementary Acts on domestic legislation, to discuss cybercrime and to review membership in the Global Digital Solidarity Fund.

It was recommended at the end of the meeting that ECOWAS, in collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union and other development partners, organize seminars to build the capacities of ICT experts in the area of cybercrime control and personal data protection. The recommendation further stated that ECOWAS member states should be encouraged to organize training sessions at the national level and that ECOWAS should assist member states with the establishment cybercrime surveillance centers.
